Ramesh Krishnan -the pride of chennai

Ramanathan Krishnan (father of Ramesh) twice reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, in 1960 and 1961. The Indian Government honoured him with the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhusan. He played many thrilling matches during 1950s and 1960s

Ramesh Krishnan was born on June 5, 1961. He was introduced to the game of tennis by his father Ramanathan Krishnan,

Ramesh Krishnan arrived in the Indian tennis arena in 1970's. In 1977, he won the U.S. National under-16 tide. This made him the first non-American to win the title. In the same year, imitating his earlier performance, he won the Indian National Championship.

He represented India in the Davis Cup from 1977 to 1993. On numerous occasions he took India into the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals. In the prime time of his career he occupied the 23 rd position in the world ranking.

His glittering performance was well-acknowledged by the Indian Government when he was honoured with the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri. In 1995, Ramesh Krishnan, assisted by his father, started tennis training centres in Chennai called the Krishnan Tennis Centre.
